NEWZROUND- Comely Girls and Commissions

Good morning!

Things have been quiet round here for a while eh? Well, I’ve been hard at work on A NEW COMIC, that’s right, and it’s nearly finished. It’s the follow up to Manly Boys which came out in 2009, and if you scour the archives no doubt you will see many a mention of this, which myself and my dear old chum Gareth Van Brookes have had in mind for the last five years. It’s called Comely Girls, here’s a few random previews:

As with Manly Boys, it’s a collaboration between me and Gareth, and it’s a pastiche of old girls’ comics, and how they were stupid and ignorant back in the old days (not like the utopian society of today). We should be having a nice reprint of Manly Boys to accompany it, expect full details very soon…

Also, here’s my latest one hour commission:

Have a look here if you want to commission me. I’ve had to put the basic price up to £25, but this is just to cover p&p and that, I’ll do you an extra couple of minutes to make up for it….

Next on the agenda is my monsters comic, which could happen very soon or never so keep your eyes peeled….POOM!

‘The Movies’

So here’s a few panels from my new strip/poster ‘The Movies‘. It’s going to be a 56 panel poster that I’ll have for sale at ELCAF on 22nd June, but I was also asked to do something for the latest OFFLife, so the strip is made up of the 30 panels i’ve finished first. I might change the colour scheme for the poster yet, but i quite like the limited palette- 4 blues, 3 reds and 2 yellows.  More of this later…

Banal Pig’s Royal Assortment, New for LACF5!

Ding Ding! Here’s the cover to my new comic, the 18th banal pig publication, created especially for the 5th Leeds Alternative Comics Fair next weekend (or specifically, the top half of the front cover of the comic- there’s a comic on the bottom half). The comic is 8 big, full colour pages and was originally planned just to be a vehicle for my I, Yeti story, but I have expanded it to include a previously unseen story called Vampire Weekend and two full page strips that are slightly tweaked versions of comics that have been printed in other anthologies. It will be a limited edition so if they all sell at LACF5, that’ll be it. Get in touch though if you can’t make it and you’d like one reserving.

I’m planning to move away from self-publishing for a bit as I’m gonna concentrate on Untitled Ape’s Epic Adventure after LACF, so this might be my last small press comic for a good while…

NEWZROUND: Laydeez and LACF5!

Hi Pals
Firstly, I want to say thanks for the great response I’ve had to the ‘I Yeti’ strip, I put a lot of work into it so it’s nice to be recognised, even if my moment in the spotlight is now over. I’ll be selling prints of the I, Yeti strip on here very shortly (UPDATE- now available here), and it will also feature in a new comic, more of which to follow…

So, on with the NEWZ:
This coming Monday the 26th November, I will be one of the speakers at the inaugural meeting of the Leeds branch of Laydeez Do Comics (details here), doing a short talk about my comics and co-organising the Leeds Alternative Comics Fair. So if you’re a comics laydee, please come along.

Speaking of LACF it appears I have been remiss in not posting my poster here, so here it is:

All being well, I will be selling a special, very limited edition comic called ‘Banal Pig’s Royal Assortment’ a full-colour collection of new and recent comics including ‘I, Yeti’, a few one-pagers and the all-new strip ‘Vampire Weekend’:

Well, you get the idea of that, I’ll have to get my cheeks in gear to get it finished though, still got to do a cover and that.
Also, if i’ve got time, I’m gonna attempt some linocut christmas cards for your pleasure.

The last thing in my newsfest is that i’m working on the possibilities of a print version of Untitled Ape’s Epic Adventure. I’ve pretty much worked out the main story now, which will be six chapters, but there will be a difference between the webcomic and the book as I’m gonna expand the character’s stories and have a few more sub plots weaving their way into the main plot. Here’s a sketch of some of the characters you can expect to see in coming chapters:

This is as much as you’re getting for now, but I’ll keep you posted as things develop, and keep an eye on the webcomic as I’ll still be posting new pages…

Very lastly, please have a look at Banal Pig vice president Gareth Brookes’ blog which he has updated with much gusto in the last few months, and is packed with tasty nuggets of art, comics and books.

The Shadow, a Vampire and a Monster of the Schwarzwald

Wassup dogs? I seem to be starting a lot more projects than i’m finishing at the moment, probably cos i’m they’re unpaid and i don’t have any deadlines, so i’ll get bored when it gets to the hard bit and move on to something that’s temporarily more exciting. Anyway, the first thing to tell you about is a thing I finished (because I got paid for it), a One Hour Drawing commission from Alan Henderson, who collects drawings of The Shadow, and I was more than happy to supply him with mine. If you want me to do a One Hour Drawing for you, all the details are here, it’s very straightforward. For process fans, here’s the sketch in blue pencil and brown brush pen, followed by the finished article which is mostly done in pentel brush pen.

Next up is a strip about a vampire (cashing in the twilight craze, natch) which I intended to enter into a competition, but i somehow found myself doing it in full colour with watercolours against my will, and it was too much work to make the deadline. it’s currently languishing in a state of two-thirds completeness, but the good news is it will be made into a minicomic for the next con I do, whenever that may be.

Lastly, my next project is a series of pencil drawings of Monsters of the Schwarzwald, featuring picturesque views of the Black Forest in Germany, and the monsters that (probably) live there. I’m really enjoying drawing in pencil, i’ve not done it for ages (not as the finished product anyway). I’m gonna see how these go and whether they might make a nice little book or series of prints or something. This is the nearly-finished version, will probably finish it later today and start another one (picture, not project, got to draw the line somewhere). Draw the line ha ha ha ha ha! See you next time pig lovers!

Newzround- Space Wars

So I was “kraken” on with Banal Pig 5 when i had the idea to do a colouring book pastiche thing, featuring the characters from my sporadic “space wars” series. Here’s a catchup on what i’ve done so far:

so the book will feature all these characters plus a few new ones (including mechagoliath in the top pic, which eagle-eyed pig lovers may have spotted bears more than a passing resemblance to Tinker from BP Showcase), all involved in ferocious battles that never really get anywhere, plus a behind the scenes look at their home planets and lifestyles away from the horrors of war (it will also probably feature the word AIEEE! on every page). it’s inspired by ropey colouring books of the 80’s with pointless narratives and dodgy drawings, like this one:

(image from randomtoyreviews.blogspot.co.uk) and you will be able to do the activities and colour it in, but it will also read as a proper comic. so that’s what i’m doing now, until i get another idea and drop it.

elsewhere, i still need money, so please buy my comics, commission a drawing off me, or simply send me a cheque or postal order.

Christopher Wren Finished!

So here’s the front page to Christopher Wren, In Search of Excitement which i finished and sent off to my dad for printing today. As previously mentioned, it folds out like a map rather than the traditional pamphlet format, and has 2 different poster sized  endings. gosh! anyways, i’m pleased with it as it stands, hopefully the finished product will be as good as i hope. It will be available for the Leeds Alternative Comics Fair 4, 28th April and i’ll be doing it in a small edition to see how it goes down.
