It’s been a bit longer than the usual 6 months since the last fair as me and fellow organiser Hugh ‘Shug’ Raine have been a bit distracted with amateur dramatics and pulling out of buying houses amongst other things, but LACF5 is going to take place on the 8th December at the usual venue, A Nation of Shopkeepers. We thought it be a bit different having the fair in the run up to Christmas, and maybe our attendees will be more interested in buying stuff as gifts as well as for themselves, we’ll see, but if it has a similar attendance to last time we’ll be well happy.
I should have some new stuff for it, I will probably make a short comic out of my strip for the Jonathan Cape/Observer Graphic Short Story Prize which I’ve just sent off and I’m very happy with, and I’ve got my vampire story nearly finished which I could easily knock up into a minicomic. I’ll probably also make a print of my ‘Don’t Confront Me‘ picture, and there’s maybe some other things i’ve done recently that would make good poster/prints.
Anyway, It promises to be a goodun so please come down, the facebook group is here, and LACF related tweets are here
Good morning/ afternoon/ evening pig lovers!
I’m pretty busy at the moment working on my secretive current project, which i’m keeping under wraps for now (apart from a few tantalising glimpses via twitter). This is why I’ve not been posting much recently, but rest assured I’ll give you the full rundown when the time is right.
In the meantime, why not take this chance to have a butchers at my illustration site? there’s a big selection of work on there from the last 12 years or summet, including recent and ongoing projects (like Christmas Socks Fox from The A-Z of Rhyming Animals, above). If you like what you see, you can always commission me to create something wonderful, from as little as £20, so feel free to drop me an e-bomb at email@example.com if you’d like to use my services.
That’s right, have a look here for your opportunity to own some of the most ‘iconic’ banal pig pages in their original form, all at extremely reasonable prices. There’s some watercolour and ink wash paintings available, but the majority of the work is pen on paper from the first four banal pig comics. The linework and hatching is a lot more nuanced and detailed in the flesh, as you lose a bit of depth during the scanning and printing, and the ivory paper makes them look real nice too. Please check them out, there’s the first Feeder and Wife page, the infamous “I wish I was dead” Ugly Mindreader page, plus Banal Pig, Jolly Bear, Fez Man and lots more…
‘Sup pig lovers? As usual, i’ve got a few things on the boil at the moment- Space Wars, a top secret 4 page full colour strip and Banal Pig 5 (as well as Untitled Ape’s Untitled Adventure, which I get round to when I can), none of which I can afford to print at the moment, but maybe one day. On that subject, I might well have to go back to working for The Man fairly soon as buying a house and earning virtually no money are not very compatible, and we’re buying a house. Anyway, here’s some panels from Banal Pig 5:
They are previews from Fez Man, Irate Robot and Jolly Bear in various states of completeness, i’ve currently got about 12 pages on the go from BP5, but i’ve got a good idea of the shape of the whole thing, which will be a bit different from previous banal pigs as it has an central story arc running through all the strips.
More newz soon, please feel free to commission something or buy stuff from me in the meantime (apologies for these pathetic requests for money, hopefully things will pick up soon and i will regain my dignity).
p.s. not many Star Wars prints left, get yours now if you want one.
p.p.s. sorry again
I’ve had a free and easy day today, so i decided to throw open the subject matter of my day of drawing to suggestions from facebook and twitter, and here are the results. Firstly, Ethel Sparrowhawk co-creator Jemima Von Schindelberg suggested ‘David Cameron eating a big sandwich while England burns’. I enjoyed drawing Cameron, with his smooth bulbous head and funny little teeth, and i had to stop myself making the sandwich a metaphor for the working classes or something, like they do in political cartoons.
Next, another old pal Ez suggested ‘an Avenger’. i’ve always fancied drawing Scarlett Johansson’s funny face so here it is, where she is black widow in the avengers film.
Next was a suggestion from twitter,
@CandyLikesFrogs suggested ‘Jellyfish’, so to mix things up a bit i did a strip, featuring our old pal Laser Skeleton, another one of the old space battles series i first did for the funnies.
next my brother Paul suggested ‘Nick Cave mowing his lawn’, so here it is:
metalblackbird suggested ‘Disney Princess’, and i did it in pen with a bit of colour to mix it up again. @
i’ve quite enjoyed knocking these out, i might do it again on a slow day, but if you fancy having something drawn especially for you that you can own, touch and display on your wall, you can get a one-hour drawing for just £20, details here.
Here’s a few panels from my piece for the upcoming Star Wars-themed show May the 4th Be With You, it’s watercolour and pen on paper and features some of my favourite random Star Wars characters slagging “you” off for some reason (it kind of makes sense when you see the whole thing)- here’s the pathetic robot bounty hunter IG88 and Bib Fortuna (sorry for the slightly dodgy pic quality- i’ll show it in full after the show). It’ll be for sale for a very reasonable price, and i am also planning to do a digitally coloured poster print from the line art, to be released after the show if there’s demand for it.
As you will hopefully be aware, it’s the Leeds Alternative Comics Fair 4 again a week on Saturday, the 28th April, so please come along and see us, and why not buy my new limited edition Christopher Wren foldy comic, plus posters, badges and the rest of my wonderful back catalogue, along with the new Comix Reader 3?
I will also be peddling wares at the Handmade and Craft Fair in Leeds on May 12th, so it’s a busy couple of weeks for old Stevie T.
And speaking of peddling wares, don’t forget about the CRAZY COMICS SALE until the end of April which has proved quite popular so far, the one hour drawings available for just £20, and my services as animal portraitist, and i’m open for other commissions for extremely reasonable rates so please email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) for details.
Oh yeah, i’ve started Banal Pig 5 as well, and i’m very excited about it. If only it didnt take so damn long to make comics…
Yes it’s back, once again myself and Hugh Raine are putting on a comics fair at A Nation of Shopkeepers, and this is my poster for it. As usual it will be marvellous, all the details are on the Leeds Alternative Comics Blog, and there’s a facebook event and a twitter if you like that sort of thing. I’m making a little minicomic/poster thing especially for it, here’s a little sneaky pic of a bit of the rough plan:
this is a new character which i think i’m gonna call christopher wren, although i’m not settled on the name yet, he’s a spunky bird on a quest for excitement. All being well it’ll be ready for LACF4, see you there…
