Banal Pig’s Royal Assortment, New for LACF5!

Ding Ding! Here’s the cover to my new comic, the 18th banal pig publication, created especially for the 5th Leeds Alternative Comics Fair next weekend (or specifically, the top half of the front cover of the comic- there’s a comic on the bottom half). The comic is 8 big, full colour pages and was originally planned just to be a vehicle for my I, Yeti story, but I have expanded it to include a previously unseen story called Vampire Weekend and two full page strips that are slightly tweaked versions of comics that have been printed in other anthologies. It will be a limited edition so if they all sell at LACF5, that’ll be it. Get in touch though if you can’t make it and you’d like one reserving.

I’m planning to move away from self-publishing for a bit as I’m gonna concentrate on Untitled Ape’s Epic Adventure after LACF, so this might be my last small press comic for a good while…

Leeds Alternative Comics Fair 5, Christmas Special

It’s been a bit longer than the usual 6 months since the last fair as me and fellow organiser Hugh ‘Shug’ Raine have been a bit distracted with amateur dramatics and pulling out of buying houses amongst other things, but LACF5 is going to take place on the 8th December at the usual venue, A Nation of Shopkeepers. We thought it be a bit different having the fair in the run up to Christmas, and maybe our attendees will be more interested in buying stuff as gifts as well as for themselves, we’ll see, but if it has a similar attendance to last time we’ll be well happy.
I should have some new stuff for it, I will probably make a short comic out of my strip for the Jonathan Cape/Observer Graphic Short Story Prize which I’ve just sent off and I’m very happy with, and I’ve got my vampire story nearly finished which I could easily knock up into a minicomic. I’ll probably also make a print of my ‘Don’t Confront Me‘ picture, and there’s maybe some other things i’ve done recently that would make good poster/prints.
Anyway, It promises to be a goodun so please come down, the facebook group is here, and LACF related tweets are here

Illustration and that

Good morning/ afternoon/ evening pig lovers!

I’m pretty busy at the moment working on my secretive current project, which i’m keeping under wraps for now (apart from a few tantalising glimpses via twitter). This is why I’ve not been posting much recently, but rest assured I’ll give you the full rundown when the time is right.

In the meantime, why not take this chance to have a butchers at my illustration site? there’s a big selection of work on there from the last 12 years or summet, including recent and ongoing projects (like Christmas Socks Fox from The A-Z of Rhyming Animals, above). If you like what you see, you can always commission me to create something wonderful, from as little as £20, so feel free to drop me an e-bomb at banalpig@gmail.com if you’d like to use my services.

NEWZROUND- Olympic Special

I’ve had a bit of a break over the last week from most of my endeavours, but just so everyone’s aware of what’s going on:

Space Wars is about a quarter of the way in, here’s a page with MechaGoliath vs Laser Skeleton. I’m still working out some of the finer points of the presentation though.
Banal Pig 5 is also in progress, with 1 completed page and about 12 in progress, and i’ve got a strong idea of what the finished product will be with this one, the question is whether i’ll ever be able to afford to print it…
I’m also planning on entering the Observer/ Jonathan Cape Graphic Short Story Competition this time around, so I’m working on something for that but i’m keeping the details of that under wraps to prevent any industrial espionage.
Don’t forget to check out my original comic art for sale, along with star wars and other poster prints and I can draw you a one hour pic for £20.

Lastly, i’ve put my copy of the mega-anthology Kramers Ergot Volume 7 on ebay, it’s now out of print and hard to find- why not have a bid?

Newzround- Banal Pig 5 Previews

‘Sup pig lovers? As usual, i’ve got a few things on the boil at the moment- Space Wars, a top secret 4 page full colour strip and Banal Pig 5 (as well as Untitled Ape’s Untitled Adventure, which I get round to when I can), none of which I can afford to print at the moment, but maybe one day. On that subject, I might well have to go back to working for The Man fairly soon as buying a house and earning virtually no money are not very compatible, and we’re buying a house. Anyway, here’s some panels from Banal Pig 5:

They are previews from Fez Man, Irate Robot and Jolly Bear in various states of completeness, i’ve currently got about 12 pages on the go from BP5, but i’ve got a good idea of the shape of the whole thing, which will be a bit different from previous banal pigs as it has an central story arc running through all the strips.

More newz soon, please feel free to commission something or buy stuff from me in the meantime (apologies for these pathetic requests for money, hopefully things will pick up soon and i will regain my dignity).

p.s. not many Star Wars prints left, get yours now if you want one.

p.p.s. sorry again

LACF Aftermath

So it was the 4th Leeds Alternative Comics Fair on Saturday, and by all accounts (certainly in my opinion) it was the best one so far. We had a great lineup of exhibitors, and a fantastic turnout with loads of people really interested and enthusiastic about what we’re all doing. As usual, co-organiser Hugh Raine has taken a masterful selection of photographs of the event so please look at them if you need evidence- the above photo is also one of Hugh’s. I was selling Christopher Wren for the first time (and made a little display especially), and there was a good response to that, with lots of people buying both the happy and unpleasant endings- there are a few left of the original edition, so go here for ordering details, along with a shonky video demonstrating the unusual format of the comic.
I’ve taken down the April Sale Madness page as promised, so thanks to everyone who took advantage of that, and yesterday i went through all the shop pages on the right hand side to update them and make sure there wasn’t any old weird offers and stuff that i’d forgotten about, and also to put prices up unfortunately. I’m not happy about it, but i’ve had to increase prices by 25p to cover the hike in postage costs (thanks David Cameron you cock), except for the BP Portrait Anthology which i have reduced to clear, and is now only £3 inc p&p. However, if you would like a few comics please email me at banalpig@gmail.com as I can work out a discount with the comics being posted together. Don’t forget, i’ve also got poster prints for sale and will do you a nice one-hour drawing of your choice for just £20, an ideal gift for your loved ones.
I also updated my about page, so have a look at that if you like.

Elsewhere, I’ve got a piece in the Star Wars show May the 4th Be with You in Leeds this weekend, so i’m looking forward to that, and i’ve got a table at the Handmade Art and Craft Fair at Wharfe Chambers, Leeds on Sat 12th May.

Christopher Wren Finished!

So here’s the front page to Christopher Wren, In Search of Excitement which i finished and sent off to my dad for printing today. As previously mentioned, it folds out like a map rather than the traditional pamphlet format, and has 2 different poster sized  endings. gosh! anyways, i’m pleased with it as it stands, hopefully the finished product will be as good as i hope. It will be available for the Leeds Alternative Comics Fair 4, 28th April and i’ll be doing it in a small edition to see how it goes down.
